What is a UK Dependent Child Visa?

A Dependent Child Visa allows a non-EEA child of a British Citizen or a person with settled status (such as Indefinite Leave to Remain or Settled Status under the EU Settlement Scheme) to enter and remain in the UK.

If successful, the child may be granted Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), depending on the circumstances. In many cases, after residing in the UK for five continuous years, the child may be eligible to apply for British citizenship through naturalisation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the UK Dependent Visa requirements?
To be eligible for a Dependent Child Visa in the UK, you must meet certain criteria, including:

1. You must be under 18 years of age.
2. You should not be leading an independent life.
3. You must not be married or in a civil partnership.
4. You should not have formed an independent family unit while in the UK.

It's important to note that there are additional requirements, particularly for adopted children, which may need to be considered as well. These requirements and any additional criteria should be carefully assessed and met when applying for a Dependent Child Visa in the UK.
Can I apply to enter the UK as the parent of a dependent child?
Yes, as the parent of a child who is a British Citizen or settled in the UK, you can apply for permission to enter or stay in the UK. To do so, you must meet certain requirements, which include:

1. Demonstrating that you have sole responsibility for the child or, at the very least, have access rights.
2. Proving that you can support yourself financially without relying on public funds.

If you meet all these requirements, you will be granted temporary permission to remain in the UK for 30 months. You can extend your stay for an additional 30 months if you continue to meet the requirements. After a total of five years, you become eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

If you are currently outside the UK, you must obtain your visa before traveling. If you are already in the UK, you may be eligible to apply, provided you are not on another Visitor Visa or temporary admission, your initial permission to stay was not granted for a period of fewer than six months (unless as a fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner), and you are not in breach of the Immigration Rules (overstaying for less than 28 days will not be taken into account). Meeting these conditions will enable you to apply for permission to enter or stay in the UK as the parent of a British Citizen or settled child.
