Startup Visa

Startup Visa

Note: The Start-Up visa route will no longer accept new applications after 13 July 2023. Applications made before then must have an endorsement from an authorised body issued before 13 April 2023. If you wish to immigrate to the UK to start a business, you can instead apply for the Innovator Founder Visa.

The Start-Up Visa was tailored to assist talented individuals from overseas in nurturing their business ideas within the UK.

Being a graduate or having available funds was not a prerequisite for this visa. It catered to businesses in an early development stage, showcasing high potential. While applicants could have already established their business, it should not have commenced trading yet, with some exceptions.

Replacing the old Tier 1 Entrepreneur Visa, the Start-Up Visa and Innovator Visa routes were introduced. The visa was a one-time issuance and didn’t offer an extension. However, eligible individuals could switch to the Innovator Visa category at the end of the two-year term.

As a high-value visa, the time spent under this visa contributed towards permanent settlement in the UK, also known as Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

To qualify, applicants needed an endorsement from an approved endorsing body. The business idea also had to exhibit innovation, viability, and scalability.

Who can Apply?

The Start-Up Visa was a sought-after category with stringent eligibility criteria, requiring comprehensive evidence.

According to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), those eligible to apply included:

Age 18 or over
First-time establishment of a UK-based business (exceptions applied to former Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur holders)
Endorsement from a UK-approved endorsing body evaluating the business idea for innovation, viability, and scalability
Intention to primarily work on the business in the UK
Endorsement issued within three months of application
Capability and expertise related to the proposed business
Proof of English language skills (B2 level CEFR)
Financial self-sufficiency in the UK

Applicants could apply as:

Sole founders
Part of a founding team (each member meeting visa requirements)

Depending on individual circumstances, additional evidence might be needed. Consulting an experienced immigration lawyer was strongly advised.

Requirements

Key requirements included:

Endorsement by a recognised UK body
A new business idea that had not yet begun trading (exceptions allowed)
Business meeting innovation, viability, and scalability criteria
The applicant's full engagement in the endorsed business idea

The endorsing body would check in at 6, 12, and 24 months to review progress.

The business could be in any sector. However, the applicant needed to show sufficient knowledge, skills, and market insight.
