Important Notice: As of now, new applicants are no longer accepted for this pathway. However, those who currently possess entry clearance or have been granted leave to enter or remain under the Tier 1 Investor Migrant category are eligible to seek an extension of their stay or apply for indefinite leave to remain.

Applications for additional leave to remain as a Tier 1 Investor are accepted until 17 February 2026.
Applications for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) under the Tier 1 Investor category are open until 17 February 2028.

What Was the Tier 1 Investor Visa?

The Tier 1 Investor visa classification was designed for individuals with the capacity to make a significant financial investment in the UK. To be eligible, applicants needed access to a minimum of £2 million, ready to invest in actively trading UK-based companies.

Eligibility Requirements

Financial Criteria:
1. Hold at least £2 million in investment funds (individually or with a partner).
2. Funds must be in a regulated financial institution.
3. Money must be freely transferable to the UK and convertible to pounds sterling.
4. Open a UK-regulated bank account for investment purposes.

Source of Funds:
1. If held for less than 2 years, evidence of the source is required.
2. Home Office scrutiny applies to all cases, even if funds are held longer.

Overseas Criminal Record Certificate:
1. Required if applying from overseas.
2. Applies to any country where the applicant or adult dependants have lived for 12+ months in the past 10 years.

Language and Maintenance:
No English language or maintenance funds requirement.

Funds Held Less Than 2 Years

You could still apply if your funds were held for less than 2 years, provided the source was:

A gift
Proceeds from the sale of assets or a business
Money from a business owned by you or your partner
Inheritance or divorce settlement
Financial awards, winnings, etc.

If held for at least 2 years, detailed source evidence was not required—but legality still had to be demonstrated.

Investment Options

Minimum of £2 million to be invested within 90 days of entry.
Only share capital and/or loan capital in active and trading UK registered companies qualified.

Prohibited Investments:

Offshore companies or trusts
Open-ended investment companies
Property-focused businesses

How long is a UK Tier 1 Investor visa valid for?
1. Initial Visa Duration:
3 years and 4 months (overseas applicants)
- 3 years (within the UK)

2. Investment Requirement:
- Invest £2 million within 3 months
- Maintain investment throughout visa validity

3. Extension and Settlement:
- Extend for an additional 2 years
- Apply for ILR after 5 years

4. Accelerated Settlement:
- ILR in 3 years with £5 million investment
- ILR in 2 years with £10 million investment

5. Settlement Requirements:
- Absence limit: max 180 days in any 12-month period
- Meet English language and Life in the UK test (unless 65+)
Tier 1 Investor Visa Extension Requirements
If Visa Granted Between 6 November 2014 and 28 March 2019
You could extend your visa if:
1. Invested £2 million in:
- UK Government bonds
- Share or loan capital in active and trading UK companies

2. Investment was made:
- Within 3 months of UK entry or visa grant
- Or no earlier than 12 months before initial visa application
- Investment was maintained during the visa period

Deadline to apply: Before 6 April 2023
If Visa Granted On or After 29 March 2019
You could extend your visa if:
- Invested £2 million in share or loan capital in active UK companies
- Investment timing as above
- Maintained the investment throughout your stay
